Prima Birdhouse Frame - Gift for Kimberly

I am having so much fun making up these Prima metal birdhouse frames. This is my third one so far. This frame is easy to transform into a great decoration piece for your home. Add family photos or just match the home decor like I did here. This is a gift for my sweet daughter Kimberly who's kitchen has a beautiful country theme to it with roosters, sunflowers, and antiques.

   I started with a Metal Birdhouse Frame by Prima and left the outside as it came with it's worn weathered look.

For that old barn feel, I used a sheet of paper with a wood grain pattern on it at the back. 

Next I took a few metal rusty stars and add black alcohol ink to them.

 Then added chicken wire, sunflowers, stars, wooden fence, grass, and this tiny little rooster.  

 I picked up a mini water-can that had the perfect green patina on it. Now every good country scene needs a sign. So I used a dowel and a little pieces of wood that I then sprayed with TH's Distress spray stain in walnut. With a felt pen I wrote the words "The Country Life". I then looked around for something to hold up the sign. I found a tiny pail to place it in which added that last touch to the country look I was going for.

GDT for NatashaScrapbooKorner....... "Love Flies High"

2015 started off on an exciting note with a guest design team invite from Natasha Cantwell of  NatashaScrapbooKorner on Zibbet. Here's my first project of 2 using a paper kit called black-white-kit  from her store. You can find all the links below.

I wanted to create a few projects showing what could be done with a paper kit besides making layouts or cards and decided covering a box for my valentines was a good way to share an idea.  First I started with a cigar box. Cover with black card stock and the paper from the kit. Laying the papers in different sizes and shape is an easy way to add pops of color through out the box.

Next I used gesso and fine glitter to soften the edges and add some sparkle. With a heart mask, gesso and more glitter little touches of love were sprinkled about. I like my glitter to stay in place so after the gesso dries and coat those areas with gel media to seal them. I took the nylon netting in pieces here and there for some wonderful texture.

The kit came with tulle which I bunched it together tied up with wire to make little pompoms. These were added around the ribbon roses. Under those clutters, I added more of the nylon netting. I used a Prima zipper pull for the handle. Added tiny metal legs and words that say it all made it look complete but wait time to add an element of surprise.

This sticking cute metal plane was just right. Finding little treasures like this is always fun and helps give the project it's theme which in this case was as the title says... "Love Flies High" I transformed the plane with gesso, glitter, nylon netting and wired hearts.

Our Creative Corner Jan. 2015 Challenge

Design team member Pamellia came up with this great challenge for Jan. Here's what she wrote for the challenge.......

 With the holidays merely a shadow behind us, my guess is you still have bits of Christmas leftovers stashed everywhere, not to mention bags of Christmas bits meant for the recycle bin. I am a hoarder of all things I think I might get around to using one day, and Holiday bits are no exception! Every closet, drawer and cupboard is overflowing with the little things I collected throughout the holidays. Things I think I might use and things heading to the curb.

Christmas wrapping, gift bags, tinsel, ribbon, gift boxes, tissue paper, Christmas crackers, wine boxes, empty gift wrap rolls, Christmas cookie tins, even the images from the fronts of cards I received...you name, I hoard it!
Let's put those bits to good use this month!
With that in mind, for my introductory challenge theme, I have chosen........
 CHRISTMAS LEFTOVERS
To be clear, your project does NOT have to have a Christmas theme, I only want you to recycle your Christmas scraps.

 "Christmas Leftovers". What a fun challenge! Take a Christmas leftover and give it new life. Well you all know how much I like to creating something with tins and this challenge was just perfect for me to take a Christmas tin and make myself another vintage yummy for my home.

I took the tin and painted it first with Gesso. Then took "Rusty Paper" by Viva and gave it a good thick coat.
                                      

Here's a few of the products used to create this look. They can be found in my Artfire store. 

I took metal feet and covered them with Caramel colored alcohol ink.

To the rusty finish I added alcohol ink here and there along with Tim Holtz Distress Spray Stain in Rusty Hinge. I finished off the tins inside, bottom and inside of the lid with burlap that I used TH Distress inks to give the edges a rusty look as well. With a touch of gold from my metallic Rub Ons set the tin was ready to add the embellishments. 

Next I used one of the resin frames from Prima, painted it with cream colored paint and used the gold Rub On to high light the decorative edges. I placed a vintage photo into the frame. Took chipboard pieces from The Dusty Attic and use gesso and ink to complete the look.

The resin camera I bought from Hobby Lobby and the flowers are from Wild Orchid Crafts.

I’m so excite to share with you that I have been invited to be on the Design Team for "Our Creative Corner" The OCC has many amazing talented artists that will inspire you with each project they share.  Here’s my first project for "Our Creative Corner". I love altering items and this little red truck said “make me pretty with vintage yumminess”, so I did. 

My home is filled with antiques and many pictures of family members from days of old, so my first thought for this truck was to add tiny old photos to it. I took the paper pad French???? by Tim Holtz that had old photos put together in a little group that were perfect for this project. I cut them apart and inked the edges to getting them ready for the next step.

I took my black gesso and painted the truck. At first I left the wheels and the inside of the truck the red but later decided to paint them black as well. Next I decided what areas I wanted the pictures on and then used Mod Podge to glue them down.

To give the truck a more aged look I then applied crackle paint over the entire truck, even the pictured areas which helps seal them. Once the crackle was tacky I went over just the black areas with brown paint and watch the magic happen.

Next I took a product from Viva called Rusty Paper to dab it over some of the brown areas. This gave it the rusty look of an old truck. 

           

 I used Tim Holtz Spray Stain in walnut, aged linen and vintage photo to give the paper flowers and leaves their brown tones. The metal daisies and metal embellishments were colored with Alcohol Ink.

For the metal “M” I dripped three different colors of brown alcohol ink on it and dabbed on some Rusty Paper as well. To help it stand up I used an old baby spoon that I alcohol inked and bent so I could glue it on for a stand.

 Vintage Yumminess........ achieved!

Vintage Frame of Memories

I created this vintage style frame to hold some very special items along with pictures and a story of my Great Grandparents. Around 1914 my Great Grandparent were proprietors of a couple different Hotels and Bars.  Under the chicken wire is a copy of a letter my Great Grandfather wrote to my Great Grandmother. The silverware came from a few different relatives and each piece has a story of it's own. There's a copy of one of the business cards on the tin lid that I rusted.

I used a rusting powder from The Dusty Attic to transform the tin. I first painted the tin with gesso and let dry. I then added a craft adhesive to the surface and before it dried I added the rusting powder. Next I sprayed it with white vinegar. Set it aside for an hour. I ended up only using the lid for this project. The rust looks like a true rust. 

I took the frame I bought at Hobby Lobby and removed the picture from the back. I left the frame the way it came because it had just the right look for this project.

I grabbed a piece of cheese cloth and sprayed it with Tim Holtz Distress Spray Stain in walnut and antique linen. This became the back drop for the letter and envelope I place in there. 

I wired the silverware on to the chicken wire and tied them up with a another piece of the cheese cloth. 

I prepared the chipboard with Viva Rusty Paper and black soot Distress ink to use as a mat for the picture of my GGrandparents.  

Next I took chipboard vines from The Dusty Attic, inked them to add to the frame. 

To the corner of the frame I glued down the rusted lid with the business card and a metal number plate with the year 14 for 1914.

I added 2 metal rusty words Live and Love to the frame along with a burlap bird, two silk flowers  and a fun garden wind fan that I found in an antique shop. 

It's always a joy to make something that will hold great memories about the family, the keepsakes and the stories.
